Ya nada nos dará lo mismo

“I [Francisco] met Tita Gutiérrez in Saltillo, Coahuila, in 2015, while I was teaching a workshop and performing my previous play, Está escrita en sus campos.
Tita, mother of three daughters, was a law teacher and a criminal investigator of homicides at the Attorney General in Coahuila.
On that occasion she gave me the book she had written: Tres océanos [Three Oceans]. She writed a dedication: “A shared truth is another kind of justice”. That’s how I knew her story.
Ya nada nos dará lo mismo [Nothing will be indifferent to us now] seeks to expose, by way of Tita’s story, the effect that corruption has over society and how the rule of law disappears before the interests of a few. An effect of which we all seem to participate.”

Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, 2017

Ya nada nos dará lo mismo arises from a real event: the murder of Mexican chef Elisa Loyo Gutiérrez in Pampanga, Philippines, in 2008.
Based on Tres océanos we tried
to not only amplify her denunciation, but also tell her personal history through a theatrical project that expanded upon the idea of absence.
The absence of a daughter in a mother’s life, the absence of bod- ies on the stage, and the absence of justice in two of the most corrupt countries in the world: The Philippines and Mexico.
I made three trips to Saltillo, Coahuila, between 2015 and 2016, in order to meet with Tita, spend time with her, interview her and compile data, documents, videos and pictures which would allow me to support the story that she wanted to share. I never tried to question or confront her perspective.
Tita is the protagonist of the play, but she doesn’t appear physically, only through a previously recorded hologram that is projected in real
size over a translucent screen of about 5 by 4 meters located in the proscenium.
Her story is mixed with my stories about the trips I made and with graphics obtained from the book Anatomía de la corrupción en México [Anatomy of Corruption in Mexico] edited by María Amparo Casar, with the intention of relating the spectator in an effective way not only to the story of Elsa and Tita but also to his own behavior in society.
