The lines above are the only thing we ever wrote about the play and we found them in a dossier that was never
completed, a raw Word document. It is difficult to speak from a distance about a first play that was above all an impulse that could not be articulated. We did not know what we were doing, we just had the certitude that it was the right thing to do. That is why now, so many years later, it still seems to us that everything in that play was right: it was what it had to be, an impulse we would
not dare modify even by a comma.
The drive behind the play came from a disagreement with the education offered by the Centro Universitario de Teatro, CUT, where we Luisa and Gabino, studied. And doubtlessly in it were al- ready inscribed many of the elements that have kept us company throughout the years: the adaptation of various texts for the dramaturgical construction; the predilection for narrative texts over dialogical ones; the use of plants on stage; the space taken for what it is, without the intention of construct- ing the place where the play happens; and the interpretation of characters that were very close to those who represented them, blurring the border between character and person.
We started from a text and began to rehearse in an abandoned laundry at the housing unit where Gabino and his family lived. Matías, Gabino’s little brother (nine years old), was the assistant during the process: he joined us during rehearsals and provided help carrying the table, two chairs and three buckets with plants that made up the scenic elements. The backdrop of the stage had a ship drawn by Genaro (ten years old) which was roughly one square meter.
It was all intuition. We registered the play for the Festival de Teatro Universitario, where we won an award (a check we used to tour the play and hold more performances), that allowed us a season at the CUT forum. At the shows our friend Harold Torres joined us, doing lights and sound from the cabin.
The play had two runs, one at the CUT and another at CasAzul; the second one was where we met Francisco Barreiro, who was stud- ying there. We spoke at the end of a performance and his optimism won us over —the desire for collaboration was born.
