Since he started acting, for mysterious reasons, he played many characters called Gabino.
In 2019 the actor Gabino Rodríguez decided to change his identity, his name and his face.
Through a series of questions that Luisa Pardo asked with persones that were close to Gabino, we build a dramaturgy that seeks to reconstruct the implications of being and ceasing to be the who we are.
What makes us be what we are? What of us would we have to leave behind in order to stop being ourselves?
The work, by trying to answer these questions, blurs the border between the masks that the actor borrows to interpret his characters and his identity. How much fiction is in reality and how much reality is in fiction?
The show recounts the change from Gabino to Lázaro through the actor’s archives, his films, his personal photos.
At the heart of the piece a question arises: can we really stop being who we are?
In April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, we received an invitation from Lola Arias to participate in her My Documents project, which would be carried out virtually. My Documents is a performance reading program in which artists from different fields explore a personal archive. This edition was presented with five projects (Rabih Mroue, Zhang Menqui, Tim Etchells, Pedro Penin and Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol). Our project was titled “Lazaro”.
The piece initially had a virtual format but in 2022 we created a live version.
A project developed for Zoom by Luisa Pardo and Lázaro Gabino Rodríguez • With the accompaniment of Mariana Villegas and Francisco Barreiro • Translation by Salvador Amores. Co-produced by Mousonturm Frankfurt am Main mit, Kampnagel Hamburg, Kaserne Basel and Münchner Kammerspielen.
Lazaro was presented live in Rome Europe and La Vignette in Montepellier. And virtually at Festival Cervantino, Mexico. FIAC Bahia, Brazil. High Season Girona, Spain. Mousonturum Frankfurt, Germany.
